It would exceed the limits of this letter and
might appear a presumption upon Your Excellency's valuable time,
were we to enumerate the many reasons in explanation of our
statements. Suffice it therefore to say that it is the well
considered opinion of our Lancashire and Yorkshire friends,
and they are many, that a trade such as this, with all its
ramifications, built up by years of patient and laborious
effort, can only be diverted into other channels gradually,
and that any endeavours to hasten this process of slow acquisit-
ion are bound to do harm. There is also the all important
question of old established valuable trademarks or "chops",
owned by the alien firms either alone or jointly with Manchester
and Bradford firms; and the Imperial Government will surely not
approve of any interference with the ownership of such trademarks,
desirable as this may appear to be on first thoughts. In short,
to stop the trade of old established alien firms in Hongkong
all at once is bound to very materially increase the number of
idle spindles and looms, and to bring further misery upon
thousands of mill and factory hands in Lancashire and Yorkshire
for some time to come.
We therefore trust, and respectfully pray, that
Your Excellency will kindly cause steps to be taken which will
ensure that these considerations are not lost sight of by those
entrusted with the important duty of liquidating the alien firms
in Hongkong which trade in Lancashire and Yorkshire textiles;
and we further pray that Your Excellency will kindly have regard
to those considerations, in the interest of our British home
trade, in case further regulations affecting it should be framed
by Your Excellency's Government.
